Preparing For Your Arrival

WHAT TO PACK

  • Clothes, hoodies, winter coat, gloves, boots, socks, hat, goggles, neck warmer, nursing shoes, waterproof boots, uniforms, undergarments, pajamas, walking shoes (Clothes should be insulated and warm for -40 weather)

  • Computer, cellphone, chargers

  • Stethoscope

  • Shampoo, toothpaste/brush, soap, q-tips, clippers, medications

  • Speaker, crafts/books

  • Sunscreen (all year long), bug spray

  • Specialty food or drink products

RURAL AND REMOTE LIVING

  • 1-3 General stores with basic grocery supply

  • Minimal bank access, but ATMs can be utilized

  • Internet access available in all communities, but may be slower

  • Some communities have cell phone service

  • Some restaurants/cafes, take out

  • Sporting/clothing stores available in Goose Bay

  • Alcohol not permitted in some rural and remote communities

FOOD & GOODS

  • In most communities, produce deliveries occur once per week

  • Meat and dairy are moderately expensive (Bulk orders of meat and produce may be available in Goose Bay)


Please Note:

Pack dry or frozen foods based on the length of your stay. Keep in mind specialty products or dietary foods may be limited - be sure to bring your favourites. Reach out to your colleagues for more tips and advice!

WEATHER

In Labrador, summer temperatures are brief but can hit 25+°C, while the winter climate is somewhat harsher (-20 to -25°C). There is lots of fog in Spring and Fall months. The weather can be quite unpredictable... be prepared to experience all 4 seasons in 1 day!

TRANSPORTATION

  • In the winter, some communities solely rely on skidoo for inter-community travel

  • Half the communities are fly-in access only, and half are available to drive in

  • All communities are serviced by 15 seat Twin Otter planes

  • Most roads are gravel - accessible by trucks, cars, ATVs

Please Note: you will be picked up when you arrive in your community. 

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Authentic Indigenous art, local craft shops and learning opportunities

  • Skidoo, snowboarding, skiing

  • Berry-picking, fishing, fires (Permits may be required; check with your local community government)

  • Recreation centers/gyms

  • Walking and hiking trails
