What does a typical day look like?

Typically, patients are seen by booked clinic appointments. Emergency care is provided via walk-in appointments or after-hours care. As needed, emergencies are transferred to tertiary centers. One clinic is walk-in appointments only.

We provide complete care including:

  • Performing EKGs

  • Blood collection

  • Advanced scope allows prescribing of some medications

  • Minor procedures (e.g. suturing, Cryofreeze, dressing changes)

  • Casting/splinting

  • End-of-life care

  • OB-GYN and pre-natal care

Nurses will work out of their own office. Currently, the community clinics are using an electronic medical record (EMR) system. We primarily use EMR, Meditech and HEALTHe NL.

Who will be working with me?

In each of our clinics there will be a

  • Personal care attendant (PCA)

    • PCAs mainly perform clerical or administrative duties. In some clinics, PCAs perform blood work and assist nurses as needed

  • Maintenance worker

    • Maintenance workers provide maintenance assistance and provides support for after-clinic hours

Depending on the clinic, staff may vary. Other staff members you may encounter include: clerks, social workers, allied health professionals, public health nurses, child behaviour management specialists, LPNs, visiting physicians, nurse practitioners, and other regional nurses.

What will my schedule be like?

In most communities, you can expect a 5 day work week during regular business hours, with a share of emergency after-hours calls.

Two communities are one-nurse stations working Monday through Friday and providing emergency after-hours calls.

What can I expect in the first couple weeks?

Within your first week of arrival, there will be a mandatory orientation. Your orientation will be tailored to your specific needs and role, but common to everyone is a week-long orientation delivered in Goose Bay. The length of orientation will depend on the years of experience the regional nurse brings to the role. After this, you will travel to your community and have on-the-ground training and ease into on-call shifts.

Where will I stay?

Depending on the community, your accommodations may be within the clinic or in an apartment separate from the clinic. You will have means of transportation to and from the clinic.
All accommodations are stocked with basic linens and kitchen supplies, and comply with all relevant safety and building codes.
